Lucky Igbinedion detained by EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Lucky Igbinedion, a former governor of Edo state. On charges of N1.6 billion in public funds embezzlement.

The EFCC’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, stated that Lucky Igbinedion was in the agency’s custody. But did not elaborate on why the former governor was invited.

From 1999 until 2007, Igbinedion was the governor of Edo. He was, however, prosecuted by the EFCC for corruption  not long after he left government.

In a N25 billion financial fraud case. A federal high court in Enugu penalized the former Edo governor N3.5 million in December 2008. The former governor chose to pay the fee rather than serve six months in prison after pleading guilty to the allegations.

Igbinedion was also ordered to repay around N500 million in addition to forfeiting three homes, one of which was in Abuja.

Although the full scope of the EFCC’s latest probe is unknown.

The former governor is claimed to be answering questions. This is in light of new evidence against him on the suspected diversion of a state loan secured during his term.
