The Okposi salt lake is located in Ohaozzara local government of Ebonyi state. This lake has great economic significance and serves as one of the most popular sites for tourism in Ebonyi state. In addition, most rural women in the region rely on it for livelihood. Forests surround the lake, and the water level is low during the rainy season. But in the dry season, it increases.

The lake has been a source of salt for the indigenous people for over 400 years. According to legend, the lake was discovered by two hunters. Over time, Okposi women led the way in solar-powered salt manufacture. As a result, the town grew into a significant commercial hub, attracting customers from modern-day Nigeria’s eastern and northern areas. As a result, Odenigbo Okposi, a well-known market, was formed. In addition, the Okposi Salt Lake, located about two hours from Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State’s capital city, was a shelter during the Biafran War when residents in the east ran out of salt.

Biafran scientists established a salt industry around the lake after discovering that it has the most significant salinity of all Eastern Nigerian lakes. They also trained the women in modern salt manufacturing procedures.
